Souley Vegan: Southern Comfort Foods with a Soulful Vegan Twist

Souley Vegan is a restaurant that combines vegan food and southern comfort dishes. The restaurant was started by Tamearra Dyson, who is a firm believer in cruelty-free eating. She founded the restaurant in 2007 with no savings and managed to make it successful by combining vegan and southern comfort food, served in a friendly, casual atmosphere.

The Menu…..Ohhhhh the Incredible Menu!

Tamearra has been cooking since she was 18. Being a vegan herself she decided to craft a new fresh menu for her restaurant that will give a chance to encourage cruelty-free vegetarian food and at the same time offer delicious fresh foods based on Creole Classics.

One of the most popular dishes at this eatery is the Okra Gumbo. Okra is paired with grits and includes tomatoes, onions, corn bell pepper, and seaweed. The dish is also served with sizable portions of lemon to augment the flavor.

Souley Vegan Southern Fried Tofu Burge is a lunch item that has also proven to be popular with patrons who frequent the eatery.  The burger is made of tofu and cornmeal. The chef skillfully fries it till it’s deliciously crispy and crunchy. It goes for $7.50 and Souley Vegan serves sizable portions of the meal, making it ideal when you are craving something delicious and vegan for lunch.

Black Eyed Pea Fritters are mixed with a Souley Vegan made a blend of fresh ingredients that include olive oil, black pepper garlic, sea salt and other spices. The blend is stewed together with the black-eyed peas which result in a more delicious flavor.

Lentils go for $5.50 and are also deliciously flavored like other vegan items on their menu. The lentils are mixed with the in-house made blend that includes tomatoes, onions, garlic, and other spices.

Drinks: Souley Vegan has a small selection of healthy and delicious fruit drinks. You can have strawberry juice with the added flavor of ginger’s sour and spicy taste for $4. Other drinks include the cayenne lemonade, green mint tea, spirulina smoothie and all are about $4 or $5.

Service That Means Something.

The vegan restaurant seeks to provide an atmosphere of fun, love, and celebration of culture.  When you get to the restaurant located in 301 Broadway, Oakland, California, you’ll place your order at the register, get a number and take your seat. The atmosphere in the restaurant is casual and relaxed. There is often soft music playing in the background; usually jazz or soul. The place has a laid-back feel with simple seats and tables as well as photos of jazz and soul greats hanging on the walls. The place has a friendly staff who are professional and helpful; often checking on the patrons.

Souley Vegan also provides catering services for events and special occasions including weddings, birthdays, corporate events, etc. The restaurant’s caterers can also serve a tailored menu for any special occasion you may be having. The vegan food served here is fairly priced and the restaurant has a great friendly casual atmosphere where you can enjoy your delicious flavored southern comforts food.

The best part to me about Souley Vegan is that they have made vegan approachable, understandable and fun.  I’ve never had so much fun doing something health and GOOD for me.  I think that’s it, I’m officially converting after my experience with Souley Vegan!
